Connecticut's Hot Lobster Roll Haven

Connecticut is the unrivaled champion when it comes to hot-buttered lobster rolls, being both the birthplace of this culinary delight and the place where the quintessential method of crafting lobster rolls is upheld. Whether warming you in winter or serving as a perfect summer snack, these buttery rolls filled with meaty lobster are a must-try.

Here are three must-visit spots lobster lovers should check out:

  1. Guilford Lobster Pound, Guilford

Situated on the rear deck and pier of a quaint lobster pound, this family-run establishment is under the ownership of one of the few remaining active lobstermen along the Long Island Sound. The lobster roll here is carefully selected from the daily haul, showcasing a generous four ounces of freshly picked lobster meat. Guests can enjoy their rolls at picnic tables that offer scenic views of the surrounding marsh, harbor, and the nearby Grass Island.

  2. Lenny and Joe’s Fish Tale, Westbrook & Madison

This enduring coastal gem continues to impress with its generously sized hot lobster roll, featuring a rich buttery touch. Served on a toasted New England–style hot dog bun, accompanied by a side of butter, it remains a standout. While they also offer a satisfying cold lobster roll, the hot variant takes the lead, outselling it by a remarkable 10 to 1 ratio.

  3. Lobster Shack, East Haven

The shack, having recently moved from Branford to East Haven, now graces its new location with delightful warm-buttered lobster rolls available all summer. Owner Arlene Crismale oversees the stand, with assistance from her husband, Nick, a former commercial lobsterman and clammer. The lobster meat is generously piled onto a toasted sub roll and finished with a refreshing spritz of fresh lemon juice.
